Text QR Code Generator
Encode any message directly in the QR code — works completely offline
A text QR code stores a plain text message directly inside the QR code image itself. When someone scans it, their phone displays the text immediately — no redirect, no internet connection, no app required. The message is fully contained within the black and white squares of the code. This makes text QR codes uniquely useful for situations where network connectivity cannot be guaranteed, or where you simply want to share a message that does not require a link.

Text QR codes vs URL QR codes — when to use each
The key difference is that a text QR code contains the content itself, while a URL QR code contains a pointer to content hosted elsewhere. Text QR codes work offline — useful for assembly instructions, product details, emergency procedures, or any scenario where internet access may be unreliable. URL QR codes can point to rich content (images, videos, interactive pages) but require a working internet connection to retrieve that content.
For short messages — a room number, an access code, a short instruction set, a greeting — text QR codes are simpler and more robust. For anything longer than a few hundred words, or anything that includes media, a URL pointing to a webpage is a better choice.
Creative and practical uses for text QR codes
Escape rooms use text QR codes to deliver cryptic clues without internet dependency. Art installations embed poems, manifestos, or hidden messages in QR codes placed throughout the exhibit. Educators place text QR codes on classroom walls with vocabulary definitions, historical facts, or math hints that students can scan independently. Product manufacturers include text QR codes on labels with allergy information, ingredient lists, or assembly notes.
In a more personal context, couples have embedded wedding vows or love letters in QR codes printed on invitations. Photographers embed "do not copy" notices in QR codes on print watermarks. The flexibility of text as a format makes it applicable wherever you want to store a short, self-contained message in a scannable form.
Character limits and QR code density
A QR code can store up to 4,296 alphanumeric characters or 2,953 bytes of binary data. However, the more content you encode, the denser the QR code becomes — more squares, smaller modules — and the harder it is to scan reliably, especially when printed small. For practical scanning at print sizes of 2-5 cm, keep your text under 300 characters. At larger print sizes (business cards, posters), up to 800 characters is reliable. If your message is longer, consider using a URL QR code that points to a webpage instead.
